Working Holiday in Slovakia for Australians (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation before departure.

Step 1

Check requirements and language preparation

Age

Australian applicants must be first-time participants and must not be accompanied by dependent children.

Length of stay

Visa validity runs between the printed start and end dates, rather than beginning automatically on first entry. Time abroad does not pause it.

References: AU-SK-END

Initial funds

Provide a return ticket or additional funds for one, separately from the stated maintenance amount.

References: AU-SK-END

Visa fee

The consulate converts the fee using its monthly rate. Confirm the amount and accepted payment method before the appointment.

References: AU-SK-END

Annual quota

The checked Sydney Australian guidance does not establish a numeric annual allocation. No allocation from another passport is transferred.

References: AU-SK-END

Application dates and timing

The Sydney page requires personal submission. Do not assume a postal filing or an application from inside Slovakia is accepted.

References: AU-SK-END

Language

The Australian checklist does not establish a Slovak proficiency score. Confirm any translation instructions for your own documents with the consulate.

Passport

Submit the Australian passport and the other documents listed by the consulate.

Insurance

Prepare evidence covering the full proposed visa period.

Documents and participation

Australians need a tertiary qualification or at least two undergraduate years. The checklist also includes the national visa form, photograph, birth-certificate copy, funds, travel evidence, insurance, holiday-purpose statement and prepaid return envelope.

Step 2

Apply through the official route

Submit the national visa application in person at the Slovak Consulate in Sydney. The page says not to apply from inside Slovakia; another Slovak mission abroad must confirm acceptance in advance.

  1. Arrange personal filing with Sydney and check that your passport and proposed visa dates leave the required validity margin.
  2. Complete the national visa form with the youth-mobility purpose and gather education, birth, funds, travel, insurance and holiday-intent evidence.
  3. Attend in person and follow the current AUD fee and passport-return instructions. Postal or courier submission is not a substitute for attendance.
  4. Check the printed visa start and end dates. Plan arrival registration and keep a copy of the consulate’s work-permit explanation for employers.

Step 3

Read your approval and entry conditions

Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.

Step 4

Get ready for the trip

Arrange whole-period insurance including repatriation and keep return-travel funds separate. Because the visa has fixed dates, avoid assuming a late arrival creates a fresh year.

  • Passport, visa and requested evidence accessible offline.
  • Initial funds, insurance and departure costs checked separately.
  • First accommodation and airport transport arranged.

Step 5

Start your Working Holiday

Report residence to Foreign Police within three working days unless your accommodation provider does it for you. Check that this has happened. Work no longer than six months for one employer and study no longer than four months.

Work

The consulate explains that no separate work permit is required and can provide a Slovak-language confirmation for an employer.

Language courses · commercial service

Plan a language course for your trip.

Through ViveCampus you can request language-course quotes with international-student discounts. Offers may vary by your country of origin and destination. A personalized quote confirms available discounts and the final price. Booking a course does not guarantee a visa.

The same page gives a different New Zealand limit. Its six-month study rule is not applicable to Australian applicants.

Frequently asked questions

Can Australians study for six months?

No. Sydney gives Australians a four-month study limit; six months is the New Zealand condition on the same page.

Does the year begin on arrival?

The visa runs between its printed dates. A later arrival or travel outside Slovakia does not restart or pause it.

References: AU-SK-END

May I apply by post?

Sydney requires personal application. Its return-envelope instruction concerns passport return, not permission to file remotely.

References: AU-SK-END

Do I need a separate work permit?

The consulate says no and can provide a Slovak-language letter for an employer. The six-month same-employer limit still applies.

References: AU-SK-END

Is arrival registration required?

Report residence within three working days unless the accommodation facility reports it. Confirm that your provider has done so.

References: AU-SK-END

Can I extend this Working Holiday visa?

The consulate says it is a once-only programme and the visa cannot be extended.
