Working Holiday in Luxembourg for Australians (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation before departure.

Step 1

Check requirements and language preparation

Age

Australian applicants must be first-time participants and must not bring dependants.

Length of stay

The ministry excludes extensions and later changes of visa type under this programme.

Initial funds

Provide bank evidence or the ministry’s accepted proof of resources. Return-ticket funds are additional.

Visa fee

The representing Belgian mission states this application fee. Confirm its payment instructions before transferring funds.

Annual quota

This is the ministry’s Australian annual allocation; it does not establish current availability.

Application dates and timing

The checked Australian guidance provides a decision period but no dated annual application window. Confirm filing arrangements with the Belgian mission.

Passport

The Luxembourg ministry gives this specific margin; prepare to it even though the representing mission’s general list is less detailed.

Insurance

Both pages use wording equivalent to cover “up to EUR 30,000”. Confirm the required coverage level with the mission rather than silently converting that wording into a verified minimum.

Documents and participation

The ministry asks for a university diploma; the Belgian mission accepts a tertiary qualification or two completed undergraduate years for Australians. Prepare the stronger applicable evidence and confirm the two-year alternative. The mission requires a criminal record less than three months old with an apostille.

Step 2

Apply through the official route

Australian applicants use the Belgian Embassy in Canberra, representing Luxembourg. The mission accepts supporting material by post or email; follow its instructions for the physical passport after a positive decision.

  1. Confirm the education evidence and insurance coverage with the Belgian mission, including any reliance on two undergraduate years rather than a diploma.
  2. Complete the Type D application and assemble photographs, passport copy, recent apostilled criminal record, CV, motivation letter, funds and whole-stay insurance.
  3. Follow the mission’s post or email submission and EUR 180 payment instructions. Supply the physical passport when requested after the decision.
  4. Check the issued visa dates before travel. It is a twelve-month multiple-entry visa with no extension or visa-type change under the programme.

Step 3

Read your approval and entry conditions

Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.

Step 4

Get ready for the trip

Allow time for the criminal-record apostille and passport validity. Keep departure funds separate from EUR 2,500 and retain written clarification of any education or insurance discrepancy.

  • Passport, visa and requested evidence accessible offline.
  • Initial funds, insurance and departure costs checked separately.
  • First accommodation and airport transport arranged.

Step 5

Start your Working Holiday

Use the visa for temporary work in Luxembourg and retain the ministry’s explanation for employers: the long-stay visa permits fixed-term work without a separate residence permit. Do not assume it permits work elsewhere in Schengen.

Work

The ministry permits one or more employers and fixed-term work without a separate residence permit. Social welfare and unemployment benefits are excluded.

Language courses · commercial service

Plan a language course for your trip.

Through ViveCampus you can request language-course quotes with international-student discounts. Offers may vary by your country of origin and destination. A personalized quote confirms available discounts and the final price. Booking a course does not guarantee a visa.

The mission allows limited study or an internship but the checked Australian pages do not establish a numeric study duration.
