Working Holiday in Germany for Australians (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation before departure.

Step 1

Check requirements and language preparation

Age

The mission explicitly raises the Australian limit to 35 from 1 October 2026. Older agreement text still mentions 30; keep the dated update when preparing your application.

Initial funds

First three months includes accommodation. Additional EUR 1,000 with one-way ticket, or EUR 1,500 with no ticket. Accommodation with relatives/friends can reduce supported housing component with invitation and host passport.

Visa fee

Mission accepts Visa/Mastercard or AUD cash equivalent; confirm current payment instructions.

Annual quota

Australian annual cap not established by inspected mission guidance; no unlimited or remaining-place claim.

Application dates and timing

Age increase to 35 took effect 1 October 2026; that is an eligibility change, not an annual application opening.

Insurance

Valid in Germany, including repatriation and pandemic cover; highlight relevant policy clauses.

Step 2

Apply through the official route

  1. Choose advance visa filing in person at Sydney, or confirm the Australian post-entry residence-permit option with the local authority.
  2. Book the official appointment and print signed VIDEX and instruction sheet; collect passport, photograph, financial/travel and insurance evidence.
  3. File no earlier than three months before travel, pay the confirmed EUR 75 equivalent and respond to any extra document requests.
  4. Check the grant and carry supporting evidence at arrival; post-entry applicants cannot work before permission is issued.

Step 3

Read your approval and entry conditions

Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.

Step 4

Get ready for the trip

Account separately for initial living/accommodation funds and the extra flight amount. Full-stay insurance must expressly cover repatriation and pandemics. The dated Australian age-35 update supersedes the older agreement’s 30 wording; retain that update for preparation.

  • Passport, visa and requested evidence accessible offline.
  • Initial funds, insurance and departure costs checked separately.
  • First accommodation and airport transport arranged.

Step 5

Start your Working Holiday

Register the local address as required and read the issued permission. Australian temporary employment has no listed employer-duration restriction, but self-employment/freelancing is not permitted. Travel outside Germany remains subject to Schengen 90/180 conditions.

Work

No separate employer-duration restriction is listed for Australians. Self-employment and freelance work are not permitted.
