Requirements, application steps and preparation before departure.

Step 1

Check requirements and language preparation

Age

18–30. Check this at the application stage. Age alone does not establish eligibility; residence and previous participation also matter.

Length of stay

Up to 12 months. This is the programme’s maximum. Read your actual permission for its end date; passport and insurance validity are separate checks.

Initial funds

Show bank funds and/or a concrete offer of paid work. Do not use the older lower figure as the current threshold.

Step 2

Apply through the official route

  1. Check Japanese citizenship, Japan residence and application age and select the Japanese UDI category.
  2. Use UDI’s electronic application and personalised checklist to prepare funds or a concrete paid-job offer, medical insurance and other evidence.
  3. Submit evidence using the receiving office, appointment and fee instructions generated for your application.
  4. After permission, check the actual entry and residence-card instructions and the work and study limits.

Step 3

Read your approval and entry conditions

Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.

Step 4

Get ready for the trip

Prepare initial funds and insurance using the current UDI amount. Confirm charges and documents from your personalised list; other nationalities’ renewal periods and evidence do not establish your requirements.

  • Passport, visa and requested evidence accessible offline.
  • Initial funds, insurance and departure costs checked separately.
  • First accommodation and airport transport arranged.

Step 5

Start your Working Holiday

Follow the permission’s entry and card instructions and record employer and study periods. Japanese Working Holiday permission is limited to 1 year total, including renewal of a shorter grant.

Language courses · commercial service

Plan a language course for your trip.

Through ViveCampus you can request language-course quotes with international-student discounts. Offers may vary by your country of origin and destination. A personalized quote confirms available discounts and the final price. Booking a course does not guarantee a visa.

A plan to study more than 3 months requires permission for study purposes.
