Working Holiday in Italy for Japanese citizens (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation before departure.

Step 1

Check requirements and language preparation

Age

18–30. Check this at the application stage. Age alone does not establish eligibility; residence and previous participation also matter.

References: COMP-IT

Length of stay

Up to 12 months. This is the programme’s maximum. Read your actual permission for its end date; passport and insurance validity are separate checks.

Initial funds

If the return flight is not purchased, Osaka’s checklist requires its cost separately. Provide 6 months of original bank records and copies; online printouts also need a bank-issued balance certificate. A guarantor is an alternative with separate documentary requirements.

Step 2

Apply through the official route

  1. Check Tokyo/Osaka jurisdiction by residence and follow Prenot@mi appointment instructions.
  2. Prepare the D visa form, photo, passport copies, recent residence certificate and financial history.
  3. Provide flights, the first week’s accommodation and full-stay insurance and file personally.
  4. Await issuance and return of the retained passport and check permission dates.

Step 3

Read your approval and entry conditions

Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.

Step 4

Get ready for the trip

These details follow Osaka’s checklist. Confirm Tokyo’s requirements if it is the competent office and allow for the passport being held. A guarantor requires relationship, identity, employment and bank evidence.

  • Passport, visa and requested evidence accessible offline.
  • Initial funds, insurance and departure costs checked separately.
  • First accommodation and airport transport arranged.

Step 5

Start your Working Holiday

Carry visa, funds and insurance evidence and confirm arrival residence formalities. Visa issuance alone does not establish that all local steps are complete.

Work

The principal purpose is a holiday; work supplements travel funds. Check the approval and official guidance for occupation and employment-duration restrictions.
