Working Holiday in Malta for Japanese citizens (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation before departure.

Step 1

Check requirements and language preparation

Age

18–30. Check this at the application stage. Age alone does not establish eligibility; residence and previous participation also matter.

Length of stay

Up to 12 months. This is the programme’s maximum. Read your actual permission for its end date; passport and insurance validity are separate checks.

References: COMP-MT

Initial funds

Initial living funds and return ticket or funds for it. Keep living-funds evidence separate from return or departure costs. This is not a complete trip budget. Check the official checklist for the accepted bank evidence and its issue date.

Visa fee

No visa fee; external-provider charges are separate. Visa or permit charges are separate from insurance, translations and provider costs. Check the authority’s payment instructions before paying.

Passport

Valid at least 90 days after the intended stay. Check passport expiry separately from permit duration. If you renew, ask the authority how to keep the passport details on the application or permission consistent.

Insurance

Whole stay; cover of at least EUR 100,000. An ordinary travel policy may not include every required item. Check exclusions, work-related cover and the start and end dates with the insurer.

Step 3

Read your approval and entry conditions

Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.

Step 4

Get ready for the trip

Arrange full-stay EUR 100,000 cover from first Schengen entry. Include name and passport number and a benefits table if the certificate omits required details.

  • Passport, visa and requested evidence accessible offline.
  • Initial funds, insurance and departure costs checked separately.
  • First accommodation and airport transport arranged.

Step 5

Start your Working Holiday

Enter in line with visa and insurance dates. Confirm detailed work and study conditions with the permission and authority.
