Working Holiday in Denmark for Japanese citizens (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation before departure.

Step 1

Check requirements and language preparation

Age

SIRI says at least 18 and no older than 31, differing from other official summaries. Applicants aged 31 are not automatically accepted or rejected.

Length of stay

Up to 12 months. This is the programme’s maximum. Read your actual permission for its end date; passport and insurance validity are separate checks.

Initial funds

DKK 15,000 plus a return ticket, or DKK 20,000. Keep living-funds evidence separate from return or departure costs. This is not a complete trip budget. Check the official checklist for the accepted bank evidence and its issue date.

Visa fee

No processing fee. Visa or permit charges are separate from insurance, translations and provider costs. Check the authority’s payment instructions before paying.

Step 2

Apply through the official route

  1. Resolve the age wording with SIRI and check Japanese nationality, Japan residence and first participation.
  2. Prepare every passport page and your own funds evidence and complete the WH1 online or paper application.
  3. Arrange and complete biometrics, normally within 14 days after an online application.
  4. Read the decision and check address registration and the residence-card delivery address after entry.

Step 3

Read your approval and entry conditions

Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.

Step 4

Get ready for the trip

Parental accounts or support promises are not accepted substitutes. Prepare your own liquid funds and return travel, and check how an early return ticket can shorten the permit. Distinguish SIRI’s no-fee rule from additional mission costs.

  • Passport, visa and requested evidence accessible offline.
  • Initial funds, insurance and departure costs checked separately.
  • First accommodation and airport transport arranged.

Step 5

Start your Working Holiday

Put your name on the mailbox at the CPR-registered address. Track total salary-reporting calendar months and do not work as self-employed. Check address-registration and other conditions for Danish lessons.

Work

Count calendar months in which salary is reported, regardless of the days or hours worked within that month.
