Requirements, application steps and preparation before departure.

Step 1

Check requirements and language preparation

Age

Maximum 30 when applying; at least 18 when permission starts. Applying before 18 is possible, subject to the ballot and all other conditions.

Length of stay

Taiwan does not receive the additional 1-year extension available to certain other nationalities.

References: TW-GB-OVERVIEW-18

Initial funds

Hold the funds for 28 consecutive days; day 28 must fall within 31 days before applying.

References: TW-GB-18

Visa fee

The healthcare surcharge is usually GBP 776 per year, separate from the visa charge and living funds. Ballot entry itself is free.

Annual quota

This is the published 2026 allocation, not remaining places or the next year’s allocation.

Application dates and timing

Ballot dates depend on the annual announcement and the 2026 schedule must not be reused; selection notification carries a separate 90-day deadline for application and biometrics.

Language

The current YMS eligibility page does not list a general English examination; ballot email must be in English and documents outside English or Welsh need certified translations.

Passport

Application and eVisa details must match the travel document; also provide ballot confirmation.

Insurance

The healthcare surcharge differs from private travel insurance. These pages do not establish a mandatory private policy specification; assess suitable travel protection separately.

Documents and participation

Taiwanese applicants need the ballot selection confirmation, alongside valid passport, bank evidence and any applicable TB evidence and translations.

Step 2

Apply through the official route

  1. Check Taiwan YMS age, past participation and child-related conditions, then enter the ballot under official announcements.
  2. After selection, keep the Home Office confirmation and prepare the visa application and biometrics under the notification deadline.
  3. Prepare GBP 2,530 held for twenty-eight consecutive days, passport and any required translations and TB evidence, then complete the online application and payment.
  4. Wait for the decision, create or check the UKVI account and eVisa, and confirm identity details and linked travel document before departure.

Step 3

Read your approval and entry conditions

Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.

Step 4

Get ready for the trip

Maintain GBP 2,530 for twenty-eight consecutive days, with the last day within thirty-one days before applying. Ballot entry is free, but the GBP 340 visa charge is separate from the healthcare surcharge, usually GBP 776 per year. Documents outside English or Welsh need certified translations; TB testing depends on applicable conditions. Keep the selection confirmation and personal deadlines.

  • Passport, visa and requested evidence accessible offline.
  • Initial funds, insurance and departure costs checked separately.
  • First accommodation and airport transport arranged.

Step 5

Start your Working Holiday

Before travel, check the eVisa and passport details in your UKVI account. Enter during the granted period; Taiwan’s normal maximum is twenty-four months and does not receive the additional one-year extension for Australia, Canada or New Zealand. Work and study must meet individual conditions, with ATAS required for some courses.

Work

Professional sport or coaching is prohibited; self-employment premises, equipment and employee conditions must all be met.
