Education and supporting documents
INZ says you must not have been outside your country for more than 2 years immediately before applying. A previous unused NZ Working Holiday grant also prevents a new first application.

Step 2
Apply through the official route
- Check age, normal US residence and any previous NZ Working Holiday grant, including an unused grant.
- Enter passport details in the INZ online application in English; assemble residence, funds, departure and insurance evidence.
- Pay the applicable charge and supply health, character or other evidence if requested, with required translations.
- Read the eVisa and entry deadline. Complete the Traveller Declaration and carry supporting evidence for border checks.
Step 3
Read your approval and entry conditions
Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.
Step 4
Get ready for the trip
Prepare evidence of normal US residence, living funds, separate departure money and full-stay medical insurance. Check passport validity against the visa’s end date, not just the flight date.

Step 5
Start your Working Holiday
Complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration, carry evidence for entry checks and obtain an IRD number before tax administration for work. Follow the eVisa conditions; temporary jobs and six months of study remain separate allowances.

The conditions exclude operating a business as owner. You do not need a job offer to apply.
