Working Holiday in Ireland for Americans (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation before departure.

Step 1

Check requirements and language preparation

Age

The DFA explicitly states no upper age limit. Education and recent-graduation conditions still apply; the age filter keeps this route for individual review.

References: IE

Length of stay

Enter within 6 months of authorisation issue and check the dates on the document. The 12-month stay cannot be extended.

Initial funds

Confirm your consulate’s current amount and keep return-ticket costs separate. This is not a total-trip budget.

References: IE

Visa fee

The DFA lists USD 270 for the named US missions and EUR 300 for the residence permit. Confirm the responsible mission’s payment instructions.

Annual quota

An annual US-passport quota needs confirmation for your passport. Check the current requirement with the issuing authority before applying.

Application dates and timing

Repeat participation may be possible, but not while an earlier WHA remains valid or until at least one year after its expiry. Check the current education condition again.

Language

The US agreement checklist does not establish a language-test threshold. Full-time qualifying education, rather than self-reported English, controls the education condition.

Passport

Insurance

Medical/travel insurance for the whole trip

Education and supporting documents

Part-time and online-only programmes do not meet the cited full-time requirement. High-school graduation alone is insufficient. Check the specific qualification with your consulate.

Step 2

Apply through the official route

  1. Apply to the Irish mission responsible for your US correspondence address. Confirm education, graduation timing and its current checklist.
  2. Stage 1 includes the form, passport copy, photos, CV, education evidence, bank evidence and confirmed application fee.
  3. After initial approval, provide the required travel tickets, full-trip insurance and original passport for Stage 2.
  4. Travel with the issued WHA, obtain the correct entry endorsement and arrange required residence registration promptly.

Step 3

Read your approval and entry conditions

Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.

Step 4

Get ready for the trip

Check when the mission must receive your application relative to graduation. Prepare the initial application first; the second stage follows initial approval and requires travel arrangements, insurance and your original passport.

  • Passport, visa and requested evidence accessible offline.
  • Initial funds, insurance and departure costs checked separately.
  • First accommodation and airport transport arranged.

Step 5

Start your Working Holiday

Present the WHA for the employment endorsement. Register for stays exceeding 90 days; the DFA lists a separate EUR 300 residence-permit fee. Arrange a PPS number. The WHA does not guarantee a job.

Work

The WHA does not set its own hourly cap. Obtain the appropriate entry endorsement and complete residence registration; work is never guaranteed.

IE

Study

Qualifying education before application does not establish a study allowance in Ireland. Ask the mission before committing to a course.
