Step 2

Apply through the official route

  1. Check the US-passport route and any student, graduation or residence conditions.
  2. Apply through an Austrian embassy or consulate in the US. Applications cannot be filed in Austria. Read the limited exceptions for US citizens already legally resident in the Schengen area.
  3. Submit through the stated official route, pay the confirmed fee and answer any follow-up requests.
  4. Read the grant, arrival deadline and work/study conditions before travelling.

Step 3

Read your approval and entry conditions

Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.

Step 4

Get ready for the trip

Check the twelve-month graduation deadline and earliest filing date together. Prepare the criminal-record certificate, full-stay insurance, initial funds and travel evidence. Confirm the actual US-applicant fee before payment.

  • Passport, visa and requested evidence accessible offline.
  • Initial funds, insurance and departure costs checked separately.
  • First accommodation and airport transport arranged.

Step 5

Start your Working Holiday

Check the visa’s dates and employment conditions before your first job. Do not use the Austrian-to-US J-1 sponsor instructions for a US citizen travelling to Austria. The stated stay cannot be extended.

Work

The embassy describes US applications for a work stay. Detailed occupational and employer restrictions are not established here; confirm them before accepting employment.

Study

The US section does not establish a study-duration allowance. Its recent-graduation requirement is an application condition, not permission for a degree course.
