Working Holiday in Australia for Dutch citizens (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation before departure.

Step 1

Check requirements and prepare your language

Age

The age limit applies when applying. Also check residence and previous participation.

Length of stay

Your visa or permit sets your permitted stay. An application is not permission to travel.

References: AU-417

Initial funds

For preparation, set aside at least AUD 5,000 for the initial stay, plus a ticket or funds to leave Australia. Home Affairs describes its guidance as usually about AUD 5,000; this is not an exact legal threshold or your entire travel budget.

Documents and participation

Belgium and the Netherlands use subclass 417. Do not import subclass 462 education, English-test or support-letter requirements. Check the official rules concerning previous 417/462 participation.

Step 2

Apply for the visa

Apply for subclass 417 outside Australia through ImmiAccount; later visas have separate requirements.

  1. Check your Dutch passport, age and earlier 417/462 visas.
  2. Prepare the official identity, financial, health and character evidence for your application.
  3. Submit the subclass 417 application through ImmiAccount while outside Australia.
  4. Wait for the decision and check entry, work and study conditions. A later visa requires a separate application.

Step 3

After approval

Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.

Step 4

Prepare your trip

Check the visa conditions against flights, insurance and course dates. Keep departure costs separate from initial funds and retain documents offline.

AU-417

  • Passport, visa and requested evidence accessible offline.
  • Initial funds, insurance and departure costs checked separately.
  • First accommodation and airport transport arranged.

Step 5

Start your Working Holiday

Check employer and study conditions in the grant. The exact tax-registration procedure still requires ATO confirmation.

AU-417

Work

You can work during the permitted stay. The usual six-month limit concerns the same employer, not all employment combined. Check official exceptions before continuing with that employer.

AU-417

Study

Study or training is limited to four months. A short English course can help you build language skills without guaranteeing employment.
