Working Holiday in Canada for British citizens (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation before departure.

Step 1

Check requirements and language preparation

Age

The age range applies at application. Also check residence, previous participation and all other conditions for your passport.

Length of stay

British citizens may have a first IEC participation up to 24 months and a second up to 12 months under any category. Earlier pre-2015 participation has a specific exception. Two prior participations normally prevent another. This is not an automatic 36-month grant.

Initial funds

Prepare at least CAD 2,500 for initial living expenses, plus a return/onward ticket or separate money to buy one. This is not the whole cost of the trip.

Passport

The work permit cannot be valid longer than your passport. British applications require the qualifying British-citizen or listed Channel Islands passport; other British nationality categories must not be assumed equivalent.

Insurance

Arrange the required insurance for the whole stay and have evidence available at entry.

Documents and participation

IRCC specifically identifies British citizens from the UK or Jersey/Guernsey and their qualifying passports. Read the participation history rules before creating another profile.

Step 2

Apply through the official route

Create an IEC Working Holiday profile and wait for an invitation. If you accept it, the official account gives a twenty-day UTC deadline for the permit application. A port-of-entry letter is not the work permit.

  1. Check the British Working Holiday category, qualifying passport and previous IEC participation before creating your profile.
  2. An invitation is required. After acceptance, follow the twenty-day deadline in UTC shown in your account.
  3. Upload your personalised checklist documents, pay the applicable fees and follow any biometric or additional-document instructions.
  4. If issued a port-of-entry letter, prepare your arrival evidence. The border officer assesses admission and issues the actual work permit.

Step 3

Read your approval and entry conditions

Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.

Step 4

Get ready for the trip

Arrange medical, hospital and repatriation insurance for the full intended stay. Short insurance can shorten the permit without a later extension to recover the lost time. Keep the return ticket or separate funds and a recent bank statement.

GB-CA-ARRIVAL-18

  • Passport, visa and requested evidence accessible offline.
  • Initial funds, insurance and departure costs checked separately.
  • First accommodation and airport transport arranged.

Step 5

Start your Working Holiday

Present passport, POE letter, insurance, funds, departure arrangements and application copies. The bank statement must be issued within one week before departure. Check the actual work permit before leaving the border, including expiry, medical restrictions, open employer and unknown location.

GB-CA-ARRIVAL-18

Work

Working Holiday covers temporary paid employment to help fund travel. Read the conditions on the actual work permit; other IEC categories have different requirements.
