Japan Working Holiday for Italian citizens (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation before departure.

Step 1

Check requirements and prepare your language

Age

You must be an Italian citizen residing in Italy when applying, before turning 31.

References: JP-IT

Length of stay

The main purpose is a holiday. Changing immigration status during the stay is not permitted under these conditions.

References: JP-IT

Initial funds

For one person: at least EUR 1,800 for initial expenses. For couples applying jointly, at least EUR 2,700. Also hold a return ticket or approximately EUR 2,000 extra to buy it. Do not copy Paris embassy figures.

Visa fee

Italy’s ministry describes free issuance by both parties. Confirm ancillary costs with the Japanese mission; translations, insurance and travel remain separate.

References: JP-FREE

Annual quota

Japan’s Foreign Ministry table lists 500 for Italy. This is an annual allocation, not evidence of remaining places or current acceptance.

Application dates and timing

Time the application around travel and the entry deadline. Italy’s programme began on 1 April 2026; that historical date does not establish current availability.

Language

The consulted Italian checklist gives no mandatory Japanese score. This does not waive school admission requirements or the language skills needed for a job.

Passport

For a planned nine-month stay, the source requires at least twelve months of passport validity.

References: JP-IT

Insurance

The source allows a written commitment to join national health insurance after arrival or insurance valid throughout the stay. Check documents and cover before travel.

Documents and participation

A previous Japanese Working Holiday visa obtained through another passport prevents another participation. The source requires good health and no criminal record.

Step 2

Apply for the visa

  1. Check residence in Italy, passport and previous participations; prepare the personal file.
  2. For Rome, email the documents to the official consular address in the source with your name in the subject, and wait for a reply. Check the mission responsible for your residence.
  3. Book and obtain email confirmation of the appointment before filing at the embassy; emailing alone does not complete the application.
  4. After issue, enter within three months and arrange insurance, address and arrival formalities.

Step 3

After approval

Read the entire approval notice: identity, dates, entry deadline and conditions. Keep it available offline. Do not assume the visa starts on your preferred date.

Step 4

Prepare your trip

Learn Japanese for housing, transport and interviews. Confirm the permitted study duration before buying a course.

Personal application file

Prepare the form, recent photo, CV, activity plan, reasons and the last three months of bank statements in your name. Follow the Japanese mission responsible for your residence.

Step 5

Start your Working Holiday

Within 14 days of moving, register your address with the responsible municipality and join national health insurance. The guide requires separate cover for excluded risks such as medical repatriation. The visa is single-entry: check special re-entry permission before leaving and returning.

Work

Work supplements travel funds and must not be the main purpose. Adult-entertainment premises and other listed activities are prohibited. Do not transfer Italy’s incoming six-month restriction to travel to Japan.
