Portugal Working Holiday for Chileans (2026)

Portugal’s Working Holiday visa combines a holiday with incidental work. Review work and study limits separately, then prepare documents, travel plans and Portuguese.

Governments can change visa requirements at any time. Always check the official government pages before applying.

Portugal Working Holiday for Chileans (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation for your trip.

Step 1

Check requirements and plan my Portuguese preparation

Age when applying

You must be 18–30 inclusive when filing. Meeting the age range does not establish that you meet the remaining requirements.

References: 1

Passport and residence

The bilateral rule requires a Chilean passport valid for more than 12 months; the general list requires 3 months beyond the intended stay. Prepare a passport satisfying both conditions and confirm applicability with the consulate. If applying outside your country of nationality, check lawful-residence evidence.

Language requirement

The Chile-specific list reviewed does not specify a Portuguese test. That is not a guarantee against further questions or documents. Portuguese preparation can help with daily life; a course guarantees neither a visa nor a job.

Other requirements

You must not be accompanied by dependants. Prepare the signed form, two photos and criminal-record certificate; check apostille or legalisation as applicable and any requested translation. The consular section may request additional documents.

Language courses · commercial service

Prepare your language skills before travelling.

Through ViveCampus, you can get quotes for language courses with international-student discounts. Offers may vary by your country of origin and destination. Request a personalized quote to confirm available discounts and the final price. Booking a course does not guarantee a visa.

Step 2

Apply for the Working Holiday visa

Annual quota

A Chile-specific annual number has not been confirmed in the sources reviewed. This does not mean places are unlimited; check with the visa section.

References: 2

Application dates

No dated annual opening for 2026 or 2027 has been confirmed. The embassy directs national-visa applications to eVisa. Confirm youth-mobility document submission arrangements; general consular appointments are not a programme opening date.

References: 3

Visa cost

The portal lists EUR 110 for national-visa administration. Confirm its application to your case, total due, payment currency and method with Santiago. Budget separately for insurance, certificates and travel; no peso conversion has been made.

References: 5 3

Decision timing

The embassy states 30 days to decide an admissible temporary-stay application. This is not a delivery promise starting when you prepare documents and does not cover obtaining an appointment or correcting the file. Confirm your case before fixing travel dates.

How to prepare your application

  1. Read the Chile section of Mobilidade Jovem and the general temporary-stay list. Prepare a passport satisfying both validity rules, criminal record, insurance, funds and return evidence.
  2. Complete the national-visa request through eVisa under the Santiago embassy’s guidance. Use your own details and confirm the youth-mobility category; this is not a Schengen tourist application.
  3. Confirm with the visa section how to submit originals, photos and certificates, whether translations are required and how to pay. Do not confuse other consular appointments with your visa submission.
  4. Await the decision before making firm financial commitments. If issued a visa, check dates, entries and work and study conditions. Keep copies of your documents for travel.

Sending the file is not approval. Confirm the authority’s instructions before making firm financial commitments.

Step 3

If my authorisation is issued

Wait for the written decision before committing to flights or study. If issued an authorisation, check its entry dates and all conditions.

Length of stay

Youth mobility allows up to 12 months. The portal says this programme does not allow a stay beyond that period. Check your issued visa’s dates and entries before travelling; do not assume an automatic extension.

A personal planning aid; ticking the list does not confirm visa eligibility. Your ticks are not saved or sent. Reloading this page starts the list again.

Funds for your stay

You must show that you can finance travel and your stay, plus return travel if you do not submit a ticket. A Chile-specific numerical minimum has not been confirmed. Immigration support evidence is not your entire accommodation, transport and study budget.

References: 1 6

Insurance throughout your stay

Submit valid travel or medical insurance throughout the stay, covering medical treatment, hospitalisation and repatriation. Check exclusions, dates and covered activities before purchase.

Flights and return travel

The Chile list allows a return ticket or enough funds to buy one; the general list mentions return transport. Prepare return evidence and ask Santiago what it accepts before buying a non-refundable ticket. This alternative does not remove support requirements for the stay.

Step 5

Start my Working Holiday in Portugal

Working during the stay

Work must remain incidental to the holiday. The Chile rule limits paid activities, including temporary work, to 6 months unless authorised. Do not assume that changing employers restarts this period. Confirm any authorisation before working longer.

Portuguese or other study

Study or training is allowed for up to 4 months on this route. Before paying for Portuguese classes, check course duration and your visa conditions. Enrolment does not alter the work limit or secure a job.

Arrival formalities and conditions

  1. Check the visa you received

Check dates, entries and category on your visa. Temporary-stay and residence-entry visas have different effects; do not assume you must apply for a residence card.

    References: 10

  2. Check whether entry must be declared

If arriving from another Schengen state without border control and your accommodation does not report your stay, check the entry declaration. The law sets three working days; confirm the current channel with the competent authority.

  3. Obtain your tax number

The NIF is used for employment, contracts and bank accounts. Follow the official tax process; receiving the number does not expand immigration permission.

    References: 12

  4. Clarify outstanding steps before work

Confirm your visa conditions and applicable employment registrations with the Portuguese authority. This review did not establish a specific card procedure for Chilean Working Holiday holders.

Your first days in Portugal

A starting point for planning, not a promise of a job or accommodation. Check your visa conditions before working or studying.

  1. Give yourself time to settle in

Plan the route to your accommodation and keep the address available offline. Allow time to rest, get to know the area and adjust your budget to your actual expenses.

Return to my preparation checklist →
  2. Prepare for your job search

Update your CV in Portuguese and practise a short introduction about your experience. Read what each role asks for and prepare for interview questions. Portuguese expectations vary between jobs.

    Explore Portuguese preparation →
  3. Keep support contacts handy

Keep the consular contact for the area where you will stay, along with your accommodation details. If you will study, ask the school what arrival guidance it provides.

If your plans change, review the costs, dates and relevant conditions before making new bookings.

Also compare Australia

Review each destination separately. Age, insurance and study conditions differ; an age filter does not decide whether you can obtain a visa.
