Japan Working Holiday for Chileans (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation for your trip.

Step 1

Check requirements and prepare my Japanese

Age when applying

Your application must be received while you are aged 18–30, inclusive. Plan ahead if you are approaching 31; age alone does not establish eligibility.

References: 1 2

Passport and residence

The embassy requires a valid Chilean passport and residence in Chile when starting the process. If you hold another nationality or live abroad, check which route applies before arranging an appointment.

Japanese for the visa

The criteria and FAQs consulted do not list a mandatory Japanese test. Schools and employers set their own expectations. Language preparation can help, but a course guarantees neither work nor a visa.

Other requirements

Check medical evidence, character, accompanying-family conditions and the restriction on a previous Japan Working Holiday grant. Use the embassy’s current checklist; this guide does not assess your individual case.

Language courses · commercial service

Prepare your language skills before travelling.

Through ViveCampus, you can get quotes for language courses with international-student discounts. Offers may vary by your country of origin and destination. Request a personalized quote to confirm available discounts and the final price. Booking a course does not guarantee a visa.

Step 2

Apply for the Working Holiday visa

Annual quota

The current FAQ states two hundred visas annually without defining a fiscal year here. It gives no remaining-place count or appointment guarantee.

References: 7

Application dates

The appointment-request form is announced for 2 November 2026 at 09:00. The FAQ places ordinary filing from 4 January 2027. The main page adds guidance for travel in the first working week of 2027: request a year-end appointment, preferably between 21 and 28 December 2026. That published exception is retained with consular confirmation for such travel; it is not a general earlier opening. No time conversion is made without an explicit zone.

References: 6 7

Visa cost

The page requires payment at visa collection but does not state the Working Holiday amount there. The linked checklist was unreadable. Confirm the programme fee before collection; a general table is not treated as evidence for this category.

References: 6 8

Decision timing

With complete documents and no issues, the current guidance indicates issue normally on the fourth working day, counting from the day after receipt. This is not a guaranteed decision date. Allow extra time for review or additional evidence and wait for the decision before non-refundable spending.

How to prepare your application

  1. Read the Chilean criteria and prepare forms in Spanish under the current checklist; confirm the funds amount and fee that could not be extracted.
  2. From the announced date, submit the appointment-request form once. Wait for confirmation and the assigned date; this is not a visa application.
  3. Submit the application and evidence personally at the assigned Consular Section appointment. Representatives, online visa filing and postal applications are not accepted.
  4. If approved, collect with the receipt, confirmed fee and insurance certificate for one year from entry. Check the visa activation deadline before travel.

Step 3

If my visa is approved

Wait for the written decision before committing to flights or study. If granted a visa, check its entry dates and all conditions.

Length of stay

The stay is up to one year from entry. This differs from the entry window: the FAQ says to enter within 90 days of issue. Check your visa dates and re-entry arrangements before leaving Japan temporarily.

Step 4

Get ready for my trip

Prepare an outbound reservation without buying a ticket merely to request an appointment. Match names exactly to the passport and keep copies: documents other than the passport are not returned. Arrange the annual policy for collection and confirm the checklist points that remain unreadable.

A personal planning aid; ticking the list does not confirm visa eligibility. Your ticks are not saved or sent. Reloading this page starts the list again.

Funds for your stay

The currently linked checklist returned no readable text, so the exact amount remains unestablished. The FAQ does accept funds across current, savings, sight/RUT and term-deposit accounts, including foreign accounts of those types; it excludes traveller’s cheques, credit cards and loans. A parent guarantor requires an original notarised guarantee and their last three months of statements.

Insurance throughout your stay

The guide requires one year of international travel insurance, supplementary to Japan’s National Health Insurance. At visa collection, it asks for the certificate covering a year from entry. Confirm coverage and dates before buying; presenting the policy is a separate step from requesting an appointment.

Flight reservation

The embassy asks for an outbound reservation. Its FAQ says purchase and a return reservation are not required to apply. Confirm the reservation format and avoid non-refundable spending before a decision.

Step 5

Start my Working Holiday in Japan

Work during your trip

A holiday must remain the main purpose. Work is incidental to funding the trip, with prohibited activities including adult-entertainment businesses. Check the specific role before accepting it.

References: 1 2

Japanese or other study

You can plan Japanese study as an activity incidental to your holiday. If study is your main purpose, check the appropriate visa before booking.

Arrival formalities and conditions

Register your address with the relevant municipality within fourteen days of establishing residence. The visa is single-entry: before a temporary departure, arrange the special re-entry permission described by the embassy. Hello Work can assist job searching; work supplements the holiday and excludes prohibited entertainment businesses.

Your first days in Japan

A starting point for planning, not a promise of a job or accommodation. Check your visa conditions before working or studying.

  1. Give yourself time to settle in

Plan the route to your accommodation and keep the address available offline. Allow time to rest, get to know the area and adjust your budget to your actual expenses.

Return to my preparation checklist →
  2. Prepare for your job search

Update your CV in Japanese and practise a short introduction about your experience. Read what each role asks for and prepare for interview questions. Japanese expectations vary between jobs.

    Explore Japanese preparation →
  3. Keep support contacts handy

Keep the consular contact for the area where you will stay, along with your accommodation details. If you will study, ask the school what arrival guidance it provides.

If your plans change, review the costs, dates and relevant conditions before making new bookings.

Also compare Australia

Review each destination separately. Age, insurance and study conditions differ; an age filter does not decide whether you can obtain a visa.

The FAQ permits applying without a return reservation and does not require buying the outbound ticket. The main page requests an outbound reservation; confirm its format and prepare the applicable funds too.

References: 6 7

Can a parent act as guarantor?

The FAQ provides for it with an original notarised guarantee and the guarantor’s last three months of statements. Also confirm the current checklist amount before filing.

References: 7

Can I travel in the first week of January 2027?

The main page directs those travellers to a year-end appointment, preferably 21–28 December; the FAQ announces ordinary filing from 4 January. Confirm that exception with the consulate.

References: 6 7

When must I register my address in Japan?

The embassy requires address registration with the relevant municipality within fourteen days of establishing residence. Keep arrival documents and follow municipal instructions.

References: 6
