Denmark Working Holiday for Chileans (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation for your trip.

Step 1

Check requirements and prepare my Danish

Age when applying

Submit from age 18 and before your 31st birthday. Booking an appointment is not submission. Check every other condition even when your age is within the range.

References: 1 4

Passport and residence

You need Chilean citizenship, a valid Chilean passport and habitual residence in Chile. Submit in person in Chile; another nationality’s procedure or being on a European trip does not replace this route.

References: 1 4

Language and form

The consulted checklist does not list a mandatory English or Danish test. Use the Chile-specific WH1 form. SIRI requires funds and insurance evidence in English or a Nordic language. Course and employer language expectations are separate.

Other requirements

First book VFS Santiago. Once confirmed, prepare the case order ID, payments, printed WH1 signed form, copies of every passport page and cover, funds, insurance and return evidence. Bring your original passport and provide biometrics at VFS. Submit in person in Chile; SIRI rejects the online form and filing elsewhere for Chileans. Previous Danish Working Holiday participation normally prevents another permit, and family members cannot derive residence from it.

Before requesting a quote, check the municipal Danish lessons in the study section too. Private-course availability and discounts need individual confirmation; ask the school for its current course options.

Language courses · commercial service

Prepare your language skills before travelling.

Through ViveCampus, you can get quotes for language courses with international-student discounts. Offers may vary by your country of origin and destination. Request a personalized quote to confirm available discounts and the final price. Booking a course does not guarantee a visa.

Step 2

Apply for the Working Holiday visa

Annual quota

March–August permits up to 75 grants; September–February can bring the annual total to 150. It is not a fresh 150 each half-year. This cap says nothing about remaining places and guarantees neither an appointment nor a permit.

References: 1 2

Application dates

SIRI names 1 March 2027 as the next quota-year start, not a confirmed appointment-booking date. The last announcement set bookings for 1 September 2026 at 09:00 local Santiago time; that is historical context. Prepare before the new period and check the appointment announcement without carrying the old hour into 2027.

References: 1 2

Visa cost

SIRI lists DKK 3,060, with separate embassy and VFS charges whose combined total is not established here. Pay only after a confirmed appointment. Create the case order ID, pay and submit in the same calendar year. The quota-refusal announcement distinguishes SIRI refunds from non-refundable VFS and Danish representation charges.

References: 1 3 2

Decision timing

SIRI lists three months from submission at VFS, potentially four when more information is needed. Appointment waiting time is separate; this does not guarantee a travel date. Keep your receipt and follow any request for further information.

How to prepare your application

  1. Read SIRI and the next appointment announcement. A quota-year start is not a booking time. Prepare funds and documents before your intended period.
  2. Book a Working Holiday appointment at VFS Santiago and wait for confirmation before paying. Use the VFS link published by SIRI. A booking does not guarantee a permit.
  3. Create the case order ID and pay the stated fees. Complete, sign and print WH1 for Chile; gather passport, copies, statements, insurance and return ticket or funds. The ID, payment and submission must be in the same calendar year.
  4. Submit in person at VFS Santiago and provide biometrics. Do not use the online application or file outside Chile. Await SIRI’s decision and check its dates and conditions before planning work or study.

An appointment is not a visa approval. Check the embassy’s instructions before making firm financial commitments.

Step 3

If my authorisation is issued

Wait for the written decision before committing to flights or study. If issued an authorisation, check its entry dates and all conditions.

Length of stay

The maximum is a year from entry. A shorter passport validity, insurance period or return ticket can shorten the permit. It cannot run beyond three months before passport expiry. Read your decision; a possible extension to complete the year is not automatic or a second Working Holiday year.

Funds for your stay

Prepare DKK 15,000 plus a return ticket, or an extra DKK 5,000 to buy one: DKK 20,000 without a ticket. Statements must be no more than 30 days old, in your own name, showing date, balance and currency; multiple statements need the same date. Funds must be liquid and accessible. Family accounts, sponsorship promises and investment portfolios are not accepted. Insurance, fees and travel are additional budget items.

References: 1 3

Insurance throughout your stay

Arrange comprehensive cover throughout the stay, including hospitalization and transport home after injury, illness or death as the form requires. Evidence must be in English or a Nordic language. Shorter cover can shorten your permit; check dates and exclusions before buying.

References: 1 3 4

Flights and return travel

You can show a return ticket or additional funds. A ticket returning before the full year may shorten your permission to that date. Do not buy a ticket merely because you think it is the only route; compare both evidence options and confirm conditions before booking.

Step 5

Start my Working Holiday in Denmark

Working during the stay

You may do salaried work for up to six calendar months in total during a twelve-month stay, not six months per employer. A month counts when salary is reported even for one day or a few hours. Track the months you work. Self-employment and running a business are not allowed; the main purpose remains a holiday.

Danish or other study

SIRI allows an educational or study programme of up to six months. It also describes Danish lessons through your municipality after address registration; a deposit and conditions for recovering it may apply. Check this public option before buying a private course and confirm your chosen duration fits your permit.

Arrival formalities and conditions

  1. Check residence and work permission

Before working check the SIRI permission and its limits. Obtaining an address or CPR number does not itself grant a work permit or expand the authorised working months.

    References: 1

  2. Establish an actual address

A CPR number requires a place where you actually live and a registrable address. Confirm with the municipality which accommodation and evidence it accepts before relying on registration.

    References: 8

  3. Register residence with the correct documents

For a stay of three months or more notify the civil registration office. Attend the municipality or International Citizen Service with passport, residence and work permit and address evidence such as a rental agreement; do not use the EU residence route.

    References: 8

  4. Use CPR without confusing it with permission

CPR supports salary, tax, banking and healthcare administration. Ask about the municipality’s next steps and retain the WH employment limits: the administrative number does not change SIRI permission.

Your first days in Denmark

A starting point for planning, not a promise of a job or accommodation. Check your visa conditions before working or studying.

  1. Give yourself time to settle in

Plan the route to your accommodation and keep the address available offline. Allow time to rest, get to know the area and adjust your budget to your actual expenses.

Return to my preparation checklist →
  2. Prepare for your job search

Update your CV in Danish and practise a short introduction about your experience. Read what each role asks for and prepare for interview questions. Danish expectations vary between jobs.

    Explore Danish preparation →
  3. Keep support contacts handy

Keep the consular contact for the area where you will stay, along with your accommodation details. If you will study, ask the school what arrival guidance it provides.

    View consular contacts →

If your plans change, review the costs, dates and relevant conditions before making new bookings.

Also compare Australia

Review each destination separately. Age, insurance and study conditions differ; an age filter does not decide whether you can obtain a visa.

Useful contacts for your trip

Embassy and consular support

SIRI assesses the permit and VFS receives applications by appointment in Santiago. The embassy is a general contact; confirm details before visiting and do not send documents to this site.

Chile’s consular office covers the Kingdom of Denmark, including Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Consular coverage does not establish residence or work rights in those territories. Request extension 1 when calling the consulate.
