Austria Working Holiday for Chileans (2026)

Requirements, application steps and preparation for your trip.

Step 1

Check requirements and plan my German preparation

Age when applying

Submit from age 18 and before turning 31. Booking an appointment is not submission. Age alone does not establish that you can obtain the visa.

References: 1 3

Passport and identity card

Bring your valid Chilean passport, a copy and Chilean identity card. Apply in person at the Santiago embassy by appointment. The online procedure for Austrians visiting Chile is a different route.

Language and form

The consulted visa checklist does not list a German or English test. Employers and courses set their own language expectations. German preparation is useful planning, not an extra visa condition or a job guarantee.

Other requirements

Prepare the signed D form, a recent photo, passport and copy, identity card, funds, insurance and travel evidence. No previously completed Austrian Working Holiday and no accompanying dependants are agreement conditions. The embassy may request more documents; send them only through the official channel.

Language courses · commercial service

Prepare your language skills before travelling.

Through ViveCampus, you can get quotes for language courses with international-student discounts. Offers may vary by your country of origin and destination. Request a personalized quote to confirm available discounts and the final price. Booking a course does not guarantee a visa.

Step 2

Apply for the Working Holiday visa

Annual quota

The embassy provides for up to 200 D visas annually for Chileans. Announced batches of 50 concern appointments, not remaining visas. An appointment does not guarantee approval.

Application dates

For 2027 stays, the embassy announces bookings on 2 November and 1 December 2026 at 15:00 CLT, using its published timezone label. Confirm the time in the official system; no other timezone is inferred. Earlier batches were 1 September and 1 October. Only the first specifies filing from 14 January 2027; other filing dates appear in the system. Prepare early: the local page requires at least two weeks before travel, while general guidance recommends three.

Visa cost

The embassy lists EUR 195, payable in Chilean pesos by cash or card. Confirm conversion and instructions when preparing your appointment. Travel, insurance, courses and living costs are separate.

Decision timing

No decision-time estimate has been established here. The two or three weeks concern filing before travel, not a promised decision time. Allow a buffer and ask about timing when arranging your appointment.

How to prepare your application

  1. Read the reservation calendar for 2027 stays. Separate booking dates from filing dates and prepare identity details only for the official system.
  2. Complete one reservation through the embassy-linked system. Opening a time slot is insufficient; keep the confirmation. Do not make multiple or bulk bookings.
  3. Gather the D form, photo, passport, identity card, statements, insurance and travel evidence. Aim to file at least three weeks ahead where possible, as general guidance recommends; confirm the buffer with the embassy.
  4. Attend the embassy in person, submit and pay under its instructions. Await the decision and read the visa’s fixed dates before arranging work or courses.

An appointment is not a visa approval. Check the embassy’s instructions before making firm financial commitments.

Step 3

If my authorisation is issued

Wait for the written decision before committing to flights or study. If issued an authorisation, check its entry dates and all conditions.

Length of stay

For Chileans the maximum is twelve months. Read the printed validity dates, which cannot be changed after issue. Prepare a passport valid for at least three months after planned return. Appointment booking does not start the stay.

A personal planning aid; ticking the list does not confirm visa eligibility. Your ticks are not saved or sent. Reloading this page starts the list again.

Funds for your stay

Prepare at least EUR 1,500 for initial support, evidenced for example by the last three months of statements. A credit-card limit is insufficient. Show a round-trip ticket or an outbound ticket plus an additional EUR 800 for return travel. Support funds are not your entire travel budget.

Insurance throughout your stay

The policy must cover medical care and accidents throughout the stay, including COVID-19 risks, with at least EUR 30,000 cover. Check dates, exclusions and accepted evidence before buying.

Flights and return travel

The checklist asks for round-trip travel or an outbound ticket plus EUR 800 for return travel. Review change and cancellation terms before spending; an appointment is not visa approval. Confirm accepted travel evidence with the embassy.

Step 5

Start my Working Holiday in Austria

Working during the stay

A WHP visa permits work to fund the holiday; employment is not the main purpose. General guidance does not require separate prior employment authorization for this scheme. Check your visa and employment conditions before accepting a job.

German or other study

Official guidance includes educational programmes as a supplementary activity. A separate numeric course limit for Chileans has not been established here. Confirm duration and conditions before paying; do not assume this replaces permission for a full degree.

Arrival formalities and conditions

  1. Check your issued visa D

Check your visa D dates before arranging your stay. The Chilean programme allows up to 12 months; moving in does not restart that period.

    References: 6

  2. Register your address

When moving into a dwelling, register within three days with the competent municipal authority. The deadline runs from moving in, subject to official exceptions.

  3. Prepare the Meldezettel

Check the documents and signed form for registration in person. Online registration has prerequisites; do not assume it is available on your first arrival.

    References: 7

  4. Maintain cover and the trip purpose

Maintain insurance throughout your stay. Work or study must complement the holiday; address registration does not expand your visa rights.

Your first days in Austria

A starting point for planning, not a promise of a job or accommodation. Check your visa conditions before working or studying.

  1. Give yourself time to settle in

Plan the route to your accommodation and keep the address available offline. Allow time to rest, get to know the area and adjust your budget to your actual expenses.

Return to my preparation checklist →
  2. Prepare for your job search

Update your CV in German and practise a short introduction about your experience. Read what each role asks for and prepare for interview questions. German expectations vary between jobs.

    Explore German preparation →
  3. Keep support contacts handy

Keep the consular contact for the area where you will stay, along with your accommodation details. If you will study, ask the school what arrival guidance it provides.

If your plans change, review the costs, dates and relevant conditions before making new bookings.

Also compare Australia

Review each destination separately. Age, insurance and study conditions differ; an age filter does not decide whether you can obtain a visa.
